SIREN THEATRE CO
Directing
What does a DIRECTOR do?
From the moment you choose your play to the time the audience arrives the director’s journey is unique and often unknown.
This workshop is the chance to increase your confidence and ability to direct coherently. Thankfully every director is different but no matter what the vision, voice or interpretation of a director there are skills that can be sharpened and important questions explored.

As director Peter Brook said, “If you just let a play speak, it may not make a sound.” The goal of a good direction is to help a play be heard by contemporary audiences.

PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK:

"Kate Gaul is a powerhouse of a Director. Her command of the craft has been seasoned over decades. She has the most incredible ability to be laser clear and specific, whilst also enthusing endless possibilities from her creatives. In doing Kate’s Directing Intensive, all my questions were answered openly and clearly. She demystifies the process of putting on your own show from start to finish, and often illuminates parts of the process that people don’t even realise they don’t know. A chance to work with Kate is to be grabbed at. She will leave you feeling inspired and energised, and full of passion to tackle your next dream project. Book! " Jules Billington

"Kate is always so generous with her time and energy. Such a rare thing. It was a great opportunity to gather with other directors
She shares her vast knowledge freely - theatrical and industry. and later, when gathering a team, shared her contacts. I could only do a day and this was not only grand fun, but so useful. I was able to apply some tricks to the show I directed recently at KXT. I highly recommend spending time with Kate Gaul discussing and playing with theatre. " Lucinda Gleeson

"As a playwright stepping into the director’s chair, this workshop flipped the script. It’s not just about bringing my own words to life—I now have the confidence to take any play, find its heartbeat, and give it a life. This workshop was a revelation, it taught me that directing isn’t just about guiding actors—it's about shaping a whole world on stage, whether it’s my words or someone else’s. I walked away not just with new skills, but the confidence to mould any script into something magic, with bold imagery and characters that leap off the stage. The experience sharpened my eye for staging and deepened my understanding of character, I left with a bolder vision and the tools to craft stories on the stage, at the same time making me a stronger writer in the process". "The Directing Intensive with Kate Gaul was a wonderfully intense 2 days exploring the craft of directing with one of Sydney's best and most inspiring directors. Kate is not only an expert in her field but a great teacher, so generous with her knowledge and time. I highly recommend it." Daniela Giorgi

"I really appreciate having had the opportunity to attend the Directing Intensive. I learned a lot from Kate —how to build a vision from scratch and how to bring it to life with the team and so many others. I met many talented producers, writers, actors, and directors, and gained invaluable knowledge and experience related to directing and theatre. I'm truly grateful!" Jiayi Liu
